Why I Started Looking at Ingredients After My Son's Eczema Journey

Dew Kind didn't begin with a business plan or a desire to start a skincare brand. Like many meaningful things, it began with a personal experience that slowly changed the way I viewed everyday products and the role they play in our homes.

When my son experienced eczema, I found myself doing what many parents do when something isn't quite right: searching for answers. I started reading ingredient labels, researching products, and paying closer attention to the items we were using every day. I wasn't looking for a miracle cure or a perfect solution. I simply wanted to feel more confident about the choices I was making for my family.

As I learned more, I realised how little I had previously thought about ingredients. Like many people, I had often relied on marketing claims or attractive packaging without looking too closely at what was actually inside a product. The more labels I read, the more questions I had. Why were some ingredient lists so long? Why was it difficult to understand what many of the ingredients were? And why did products marketed as "natural" often still feel anything but simple?

That curiosity led me down a path I never expected to take.

A Return to Simplicity

What began as a search for gentler products gradually became a broader shift in perspective. Rather than looking for the newest trends, I found myself drawn to traditional ingredients that had been used for generations. There was something reassuring about their simplicity and history.

One ingredient that continually appeared in my research was tallow.

Long before modern skincare became increasingly complex, tallow was widely used in soaps, balms, and skincare preparations. What interested me wasn't that it was becoming popular again. It was that it had stood the test of time. For generations, people had relied on simple, whole ingredients to care for their skin, and I found myself wanting to understand why.

The more I learned, the more I appreciated the value of simplicity. Fewer ingredients. Greater transparency. Products made with purpose rather than unnecessary complexity.

Creating a More Thoughtful Home

As often happens, my focus expanded beyond skincare.

I began paying closer attention to the products we used throughout our home and the habits that shaped our daily routines. Not because I wanted to achieve perfection, but because I wanted our home to reflect the values that mattered most to us.

For me, creating a lower-tox home has never been about fear or strict rules. It's not about throwing everything away and starting over. Instead, it's about making small, thoughtful choices over time and recognising that every decision is an opportunity to be more intentional.

Sometimes that looks like choosing a handmade soap with ingredients you recognise. Sometimes it's selecting a balm made with traditional ingredients. Other times it's as simple as lighting a candle at the end of the day and creating a quiet moment to slow down.

These may seem like small things, but together they shape the way we experience our homes and care for ourselves and the people we love.

Why I Created Dew Kind

As I continued learning and making products for my own family, friends and family members began asking for them too. What started as a personal journey gradually evolved into something I hadn't anticipated: a business built around the values that had guided me from the beginning.

Dew Kind was created to offer products that are thoughtfully made, transparent in their ingredients, and grounded in traditional craftsmanship. Every balm, soap, and candle is made in small batches with care and intention, using ingredients chosen for a reason rather than simply following trends.

As a mother, I understand the desire to know what you're bringing into your home. I understand the questions that arise when you're standing in a shop reading labels and wondering whether there might be a simpler option. Those experiences continue to shape every decision we make as a brand.

More Than Skincare

While Dew Kind began with a skincare journey, it has grown into something larger than that.

At its heart, Dew Kind is about slowing down and embracing simple rituals that bring comfort to everyday life. It's about creating products that support moments of care, whether that's applying a nourishing balm, washing with a handmade soap, or lighting a candle at the end of a busy day.

My son's eczema journey was the catalyst that set me on this path, but the lessons I learned along the way extended far beyond skincare. They taught me the value of paying attention, asking questions, and choosing simplicity where possible.

Those values continue to guide Dew Kind today, and they're the reason behind every product we create.

Because sometimes the most meaningful changes begin with a single question and one small, thoughtful choice at a time.
